Closeboard Fence Panels for Garden Boundaries

Ready-made panels combine the overlapping featheredge finish with separate sections that fit between suitable fence posts.

Pre-Assembled Panels for New and Replacement Fences

Each panel is made from overlapping vertical featheredge boards fixed to horizontal supporting rails. Choose the height you need, then match the panel to your posts and gravel boards. For replacements, check the existing opening and the chosen panel’s dimensions before ordering.

Panels or Continuous Closeboard Fencing?

Panels form separate bays and are normally stepped on sloping ground. Continuous closeboard fencing is built on site from individual boards and rails, allowing the layout to be planned around changes in ground level.

Plan Your Closeboard Fence

Choose your panels above, then check the specification, post spacing and any extras you need to complete your fence.

Panel Specification

Made in our Norfolk workshop using pressure-treated timber, with a fitted top capping strip included.

  • Width: 6ft (1.83m) across the range.
  • Heights: 3ft to 6ft, in 6in increments.
  • Featheredge boards: 125mm × 22mm.
  • Supporting rails: 75mm × 32mm × 1830mm.
  • 6ft and 5ft 6in panels: four supporting rails.
  • 5ft panels and lower: three supporting rails.

A separate panel capping rail is not normally needed.

Height, Spacing and Sloping Ground

Allow for your gravel board. A 5ft 6in panel above a 6in gravel board gives approximately 6ft overall. Measure from the intended ground level to the finished top of the fence.

Check the post spacing. Panels are 6ft wide, but posts should not automatically be set at 6ft centres. Allow for your post dimensions and fixing method.

Plan for slopes. These rigid panels are installed level, with each bay stepped to follow the ground. They cannot be raked like fencing built board by board on site.

Plan your materials with the fence panel calculator.

Complete Your Fencing Run

Choose timber fence posts or a slotted concrete post system. A gravel board beneath the panels helps keep the timber away from soil and standing water.

A straight freestanding run normally needs one more post than panels. Allow for extra corner, end or gate posts where your layout requires them.

Check that your chosen posts, gravel boards and fixings suit the panel and installation method.

Comparing Fence Panels?

Closeboard panels use overlapping vertical featheredge boards on supporting rails to form a solid boundary. Lap panels use thinner horizontal boards and a lighter supporting structure. For a full perimeter frame that adds rigidity and defined fixing points, explore our framed closeboard panels.

Closeboard Fence Panels – Frequently Asked Questions

1. What sizes are available, and does the height include a gravel board?
Our closeboard panels are 6ft (approximately 1.83m) wide, with heights of 3ft, 3ft 6in, 4ft, 4ft 6in, 5ft, 5ft 6in and 6ft. These are panel heights only. Allow separately for a gravel board: a 5ft 6in panel above a 6in gravel board gives an overall height of approximately 6ft.
2. Will these panels fit my existing concrete or timber posts?
Our standard closeboard panels can be fitted to suitable timber posts or slotted concrete posts. Before ordering replacements, check the condition of your posts, measure the opening and compare it with the chosen panel’s dimensions. For concrete posts, also check that the slots accommodate the panel depth. Contact us if you need help checking the fit.
3. What is included with each closeboard panel?
Each panel arrives assembled from pressure-treated brown timber, with supporting rails and a fitted top capping strip. Posts, gravel boards, post mix and fixings are sold separately, so you can choose the components that suit your fence.
4. How many panels and posts do I need?
Measure the full fence run and use our fence panel calculator to plan your materials. A straight freestanding run normally needs one more post than panels. Check the estimate against your layout, allowing for corners, gate openings and any existing posts you intend to reuse.
5. Do you deliver closeboard fence panels, or can I collect?
We deliver across Norfolk, Suffolk and selected parts of the East of England. Availability, delivery charges and free-delivery thresholds depend on your postcode and order value. Check delivery areas and charges before ordering. Collection from our Norfolk yard is also available by appointment.
